WKA Kickboxing Black Belts

Black Belt Grading Requirements – 1st Dan

The Grading will take approximately 4 to 5 hours to complete. Students will only leave the floor when permission has been granted or has been directed to do so by the Instructor taking that part of the Black Belt grading.

The Black Belt Grading will be Instructed/tested by WKA 7th Dan Grandmasters (or above) or a board consisting of no less than two 4th Dan Masters or above ).

The highest Dan grade or Senior Executive member in attendance has the overall authority / final say on any issues/decisions, that arise on the day and may direct changes where he or she feels is appropriate at the time.

A 1st Dan Black Belt grading is either Pass or Fail on the day. There will be no remedial/extra testing done outside of ‘the grading’.

Requirements of students to grade:

A WKA student wishing to grade for Black-Belt (1st Dan Assessment) will have his/her name submitted in writing to the WKA grading committee by their Club Coach / Manager / Sensei

Students wishing to grade must have achieved a high attendance record over four years before they can be considered for grading

The Club will outline in writing the students request, which will include a brief description of the students following:

  • Years of training/attendance/ record of grading
  • Fight record if applicable to the student
  • Dedication
  • Determination
  • Fitness level
  • Skill level
  • Previous or other training qualifications / Martial Arts (Grades / Belts)
  • Commitment
  • Current referee / Judge training
  • Assists with Instructing
  • Any injuries or medical conditions panel need to be aware of.

Training Equipment / Uniform

  • Club Uniform / Training attire to be worn.
  • Gloves: own- (Minimum 10 OZ)
  • Mouthguard
  • Groin Guard (male)
  • Head guard (optional)
  • Leather shins- own
  • Focus Pads – own / or supplied
  • Thai Pads- own / or suppled
  • Thai Shield- own / or supplied
  • Coloured belt to be worn (Brown, Brown/White stripe, Club Black etc. – Previous grading)
  • Piercings / earrings / jewellery – to be removed
  • Water bottle/towel
  • Clean uniform to change (Blood etc.)

TimeLine:

All students will present themselves to the Grading panel at least 30 minutes before the commencement of grading.

Students will conduct a full stretch and warm up in their own time and will be expected to be ready to start without a formal warm-up.

HOUR 0 to 1. 5 = Technique / Combinations
HOUR 1.5 to 3.0 = Pad work / Thai Pads / Shield Work
Hour 3.0 to 4.0 = Controlled sparring
Hour 4.0 to 4.45 = Conditioning / fitness – examiners choice
Hour 5.0 = Grading complete.

  • Stamping of foot after throwing a fake kick or throwing any type of kick. The use of the stamp of the foot is used as a trampoline for the blitz + blitz

  • Stepping back hook kick as defence + back kick off opposite leg
  • Opposite punch + axe kick front leg + low kick back leg
  • Jab + straight punch + switch/low kick front leg + turning back kick
  • Deviation to the right hook punch off front hand to the body + opposite punch to the face + low kick front leg to inside of calf + straight punch

NOTE:

Examiners / Grading officials own combinations to be included.
Combinations to be done in preferred stance. Changing into the opposite stance is permitted at the discretion of panel for basic combinations.
Combinations to be done initially at a slow pace (min of 5) to show the correct technique. Then done at fast pace/power etc.

NOTE:

Examiners / Grading panel will have Multiple Pad combinations available from basic to advanced.  The examiners will choose some or as many available in the time slot available to them. Due to varied students from different clubs, etc. Instructors must be able to demonstrate the combination if the student is unsure of combination or terminology.

The student holding the pads will also be assessed on pad holding as part of the grading.

THAI KICKING:
50 x LEAD LEG
50 x REAR LEG

CHANGE STANCE – REPEAT

KNEE STRIKES (in a clinch) 2 MINUTES
HORSE STANCE:  Bent at knees / straight back/arms straight out front.
No moving around, no changing position, Focused forward.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT TO BE TESTED ALL TOGETHER:

PRESS- UPS x 40

SIT UPS / CRUNCHIES x 50

SQUATS x 80

NOTE: Cardio exercises to be given whenever the examiners wish. These can be given in between or during any formal testing exercise.

CONTROLLED SPARRING: All students to move around and spar with different students.

Full protective equipment to be worn:

  • 1x Student defends only / 1x Student attacks Hands-only
  • 1x Student defends only / 1x Student attacks with Kicks
  • 1x Student defends only / 1x Student attacks with Hands and Kicks
  • Hands and Kicks both defend and attack (light sparing)
  • Two students attack 1x student (two on one)
  • Three on one.

The grading is designed to have nil downtime apart from water stops/wiping down of sweat/toilet break if required. It is designed to be a high-intensity grading, where fitness is paramount, including technique.

Formal presentation Belts / Certificates to be awarded at the end of Grading.

Any Student who fails the Grading will be notified away from the other Students and given reasons for the decision. This student to be excused prior to Belts being awarded.

At least 2 years must have passed since last exam

Complete a selection of the combinations from 1st Dan Black Belt test

UNDERSTANDING MOVEMENT AND COMBINATIONS

  1. Be able to put together pad work combinations whilst taking a student on pads 3 x 2 mins rounds
  2. Work out if a given technique works in a combination.
  3. Understand and explain correct distances for techniques

TACTICS and TECNIQUES

  1. Be able to demonstrate all punches, techniques, combinations perfectly in both stances going forward and backwards, jumping, turning jump turning
  2. Be able to demonstrate the qualities of kickboxing, what are the organic qualities, what are the muscular qualities?
  3. What are the physical qualities?
  4. Explanation of all these questions.

PRATICAL
Been able to teach the following techniques as if learned for self-defense and demonstrate it:

  1. Defense to punches to the face
  2. Defense to kicks to the body
  3. Defense to strangle holds to the neck

Been able to demonstrate how you would take a basic class through:

  1. Warm ups
  2. Cool downs
  3. Stretching

At least 3 years must have passed since last exam – at least 5 years as an instructor

UNDERSTANDING GRADINGS AND EXAMINATION

  1. Be able to put together pad work combinations for a grading.
  2. Understand how techniques should be judges in regards to different ages and abilities.
  3. Be able to explain distance and understand combinations that don’t work to test those who are testing for 2nd Dan
  4. Small thesis on any aspect of kickboxing 1000 words in English
  5. Nutrition: how a kick boxer can keep his weight for his fighting division
  6. Write up a nutrition plan for a novice kick boxer

At least 4 years must have passed since last exam– at least 9 years as an instructor

Requirements for grading

  1. Must have been active in their National Federation.
  2. Be involved in the teaching of students that have successfully graded to 1st Dan
  3. Must be in good standing with the National Federation
  4. Thesis on any aspect of kickboxing 2000 words in English

At least 5 years must have passed since last promotion – at least 14 years as an instructor

  1. Must have been active in their National Federation.
  2. Be involved in the teaching of students that have successfully graded to 2nd Dan
  3. Been on a grading board that has promoted to 1st Dan

At least 6 years must have passed since last promotion – at least 20 years as an instructor

  1. Must have been heavily active in their National Federation.
  2. Be involved in international events and boards
  3. Been on a grading board that has promoted to 2nd Dan

At least 7 years must have passed since last promotion

Requirements for grading

  1. Must be in good standing with International association
  2. Awarded on Merit
  3. Must be active in the international association with a good attendance at international events.
  4. Thesis on the aspect of kickboxing grading’s and standards 3000 words in English
  5. Have been the chief examiner of grading’s to 3rd Dan

At least 8 years must have passed since last promotion

Requirements for grading

  1. Must be in good standing with International association
  2. Awarded on Merit
  3. Must be active in the international association with good attendance at international events.
  4. Thesis on the aspect of kickboxing grading’s and standards 3000 words in English
  5. Have been on a grading board that has promoted to 4th Dan

At least 9 years must have passed since last promotion

Requirements for grading

  1. Must be in good standing with International association
  2. Awarded on Merit.
  3. Must be active in the international association with a good attendance at international events.
  4. Thesis on their personal life in kickboxing and martial arts 3000 words in English.

The World President reserves the right to bestow ranks to those who have shown outstanding work for the WKA.
